Web Desk — The Indian Cricket Board plans to launch the women’s edition of the Indian Premier League Twenty20 next year.

“It needs to be approved at the AGM,” Sourav Ganguly, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told reporters on Friday.

“We hope to have it going by next year.” IPL chairman Brijesh Patel said the women’s version has “started” and could be a five- or six-team league.

The IPL governing council met in Mumbai on Friday and took a number of key decisions, including floatation of the media rights tender for the next five years.

In a break away from the previous term, when Star India paid $2.55 billion for five years of TV and digital rights, bids are expected to be invited separately for digital, TV, and rest of the world rights.

The base price from various categories will remain at $4 billion this time. For the BCCI, the money-spinning league generates a lot of revenue. Pre-pandemic, the IPL generated more than $11 billion for the Indian economy each year.
