Monitoring Desk – The founder of PTI, Imran Khan, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in the £190 million case, while his wife, Bushra Bibi, has been sentenced to 7 years. Imran Khan has also been fined Rs. 1 million, and Bushra Bibi has been fined Rs. 500,000.
The reserved verdict was announced by Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana after several delays. While delivering the judgment, Judge Nasir Javed Rana stated that Imran Khan had been convicted of corrupt practices. Failure to pay the fines will result in an additional six months of imprisonment for Imran Khan and three months for Bushra Bibi.
Barristers Gohar and Salman Safdar were present in the courtroom at the time of sentencing. Imran Khan has the right to appeal the verdict in the Islamabad High Court.
According to the court’s decision, the Al-Qadir Trust University will be placed under government custody.
PTI leadership has announced to challenge the verdict in the higher courts.
Background of the case
The hearing of the £190 million reference linked to the Al-Qadir Trust University was completed in one year, with over 100 court sessions held.
The court had reserved the verdict in the £190 million case on December 18, 2024, and set December 23 as the date for announcing the decision. However, the verdict was not delivered on that date, and a new date, January 6, 2025, was assigned. The January 6 date was also postponed, and January 13 was set for the announcement, but the decision was not announced on that day either. Finally, the court scheduled January 17 for the case.
According to the allegations, PTI founder Imran Khan used his influence to have a secret agreement approved by the federal cabinet. Former Accountability Advisor Mirza Shahzad Akbar signed the National Crime Agency’s confidentiality deed on December 6, 2019. Additionally, Bushra Bibi is accused of assisting the PTI founder in his illegal activities.
