By Web Desk — Protests continue in Turkey against the possible visit of the Israeli President, but despite all this, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Israeli President Isaac Herzog will visit Turkey in March this year.
Speaking to the media, the Turkish president said he was ready to improve relations with Israel and that the purpose of the Israeli president’s visit was to reduce tensions between the two countries.
Relations between Turkey and Israel have been strained since an Israeli attack on a Turkish flotilla in the Gaza Strip in 2010 that killed 10 civilians. However, for some time now, the two countries have been working to restore bilateral relations, and the Turkish president has been in occasional telephone contact with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and other Israeli leaders.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said last week that he was ready to work with Israel on reviving an old plan to send Mediterranean gas to European customers via Turkey.
Earlier, on January 27, Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his Israeli counterpart would visit Turkey in February, but did not give a reason for the delay.
