Web Desk — The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, made a significant remark regarding the situation in Syria. She stated that there should be no place for Russia, Iran, or extremism in Syria’s future.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with EU foreign ministers, she hinted at the possibility of lifting sanctions on Syria. She added that EU ministers agree that Syria’s leadership must rid itself of Russian influence.
Kaja Kallas emphasized that the European Union is playing its part in Syria’s reconstruction and will continue to support a comprehensive political path under new Syrian leadership.
According to a report by Al Arabiya Urdu, during the EU foreign ministers’ meeting, representatives from France, Germany, and Italy presented their respective proposals for the post-Assad phase in Syria and the potential roles of regional stakeholders.
The meeting concluded that lifting sanctions on Syria and Tahrir al-Sham was premature at this stage. However, it was agreed that the European Union would have no objection to recognizing and engaging indirectly with a new political administration in Damascus. Further steps will depend on the actions taken by Syria’s new leadership.
