OTTAWA: (Web Desk) Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau’s gamble on snap elections didn’t pay off as he failed to win a majority and will lead a minority government for the second time.
Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, will continue as Canadian Prime Minister but unfortunately, he could not win an expected majority in a snap election that he announced to capitalize on his government’s performance during the pandemic.
Results with 98% of votes counted show that Trudeau’s Liberals have lead in 158 seats, short of 170 for a parliamentary majority.
The Conservative Party of Canada has so far a majority in 119 seats. So, the Liberals are projected to form a minority government which means the Liberals will need to work with other parties in their second minority government.
Trudeau spoke to supporters pledging to work with other parties for the betterment of all Canadians. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, whose party remained second, conceded defeat.
The results give us an idea that the House of Commons of Canada will be very much like the old one.
