Avatar 2 May Not Hit Disney+ Soon. When Will It Happen?

Avatar 2 streaming on Disney+

Web Desk — Those looking for Avatar 2: The Way of Water to be released on Disney+ will have to wait as the movie may not hit Disney+ in the near future.

Disney, since 2019, has followed a basic order of operations: A movie will eventually be streamed on Disney+ if it is released in theaters.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the studio to release more films directly on the streamer to set a new precedent for theatrical release windows.

It is presumed that Avatar 2’s immediate worldwide performance may affect when it is eventually available to stream on Disney+.

Typically films released in theaters, before 2020, would follow a 90-day window before being available to purchase on VOD or Blu-Ray/DVD.

Disney, since 2020, has released some films day-and-date in theaters and streaming (Black Widow and Raya and the Last Dragon both were given “Premier Access” (additional cost) options on Disney+).

For some of 2022’s biggest films, audiences, in recent memory, have seen theatrical windows shrink. For example, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ was available to stream on Disney+ 47 days after its theatrical release. A few months later, Thor Love and Thunder were available to stream 62 days after its theatrical release.

James Cameron, director of Avatar, has the track record to show that this film will likely be a historically successful sequel. So, keeping in mind Avatar 2’s global box office performance, it will be critical to understanding when the movie will begin streaming on Disney+.

Seeing The Way of Water’s top-notch box office performance, there will be no rush to make it available streaming.

Avatar 2, during its opening weekend, grossed $134 million domestically and $307.6 million additional internationally. Of 2022 the $441.6 million global opening is the second-highest as compared to May’s Multiverse of Madness opened to $449.4 million worldwide).

It would definitely be a fascinating experience to see how Disney handles this one, especially considering the Avatar franchise is most famously known for its box office longevity and being made for the theater.

So, it will be safe to bet to assume James Cameron won’t rush for his first film in 13 years to begin streaming.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
