Web Desk — Taking advantage of an end to import restrictions, the Pakistani business community plans to boost the local food industry.
Many local production units leading several Pakistanis have decided to sign Joint Venture (JV) agreements following the recent dollar crisis. Most of such deals were done with their counterparts from Thailand.
Senior vice president Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI), Zafar Mahmood says Pakistan imports a significant amount of human as well as pet food from Thailand not only because it is cheap but also because there are limited Halal food options.
He said that people used to adopt various means like making payments from a third country or taking credits due to restrictions on imports, adding these were all complex procedures.
He said many importers have decided to establish local units of the same companies who used to supply us as the trade has started to ease.
Pakistan, apart from pet foods, also imports large quantities of processed food for humans from Thailand. The human food Pakistan imports from Thailand includes chicken sausages, carbonated and non-carbonated drinks, candies and jellies, etc.
