According to reports, the service is closely modeled after Twitter, which was previously Trump’s preferred social media platform. He was banned from Twitter in early 2021 after the storming of the US Capitol building prompted Twitter to claim Trump was behind the violence.

Why Did Trump Start a Social Network?

Why would Trump want his own social network? He once had nearly 90 million Twitter followers before his account was shut down, and he has 34 million followers on Facebook, which also banned him until at least January 2023.

Another company involved is Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC), a publicly-traded SPAC founded by Miami banker Patrick Orlando. Both entities have entered into a merger agreement to make TMTG public.

Is Truth Social for you? Probably not. There was no intention of using this platform as a replacement for mainstream services like Twitter or Facebook. It is a social media platform designed to combat the perceived “woke culture” and less about content moderation or accessibility.

“We won’t silence our fellow citizens for the simple reason that they might be wrong, or worse, because we think American citizens are incapable of handling the truth,” Trump said. The site’s terms of service mention that your account can be suspended if you make fun of it.
