South Korea’s New ‘Workcation Visa’, Check Details

Web Desk – South Korea’s Ministry of Justice announced on December 29, 2023, that it was initiating the pilot phase of the ‘Digital Nomad’ visa or workcation visa for overseas remote workers – allowing them to stay for a long time in Korea. The Korean government, under this project, will start issuing visas from January 1, 2024.

South Korea’s Justice Ministry said in a statement that through the introduction of the digital nomad visa, it is expected that high-income foreigners will stay in various parts of the country to strengthen the local economy. Likewise, it will be an opportunity for us to showcase our country and our culture to them.

Besides living in Korea while working for your existing company under this visa, you can also sponsor your spouse and children.

Here is all you need to know.

Who can get a digital nomad visa?

  1. You must be working with an overseas company: Foreigners employed with overseas companies and capable of working remotely. Foreigners who have worked in the same industry for more than one year and their family members.
    2. Age limit: You must be at least 18 years old.
    3. Experience: Your working experience in the current field must not be less than a year.
    4. Income requirements: Your salary should be at least 7.08 million won per month or approximately Dh20,000 per month.
    5. Medical insurance: You will be required to purchase personal medical insurance with coverage of at least KRW 100 million (Dh280,606.47).

Restrictions on working in Korea

Digital nomad visa holders are strictly not allowed to have domestic employment to keep the Korean domestic market protected. For domestic employment, the digital nomad visa holders must obtain a separate employment visa.

How long is the visa valid for?

The visa holders will be able to work remotely in Korea for a company abroad for one year. The visa is extendable for another year, staying in Korea for up to two years.

Documents You Require

You will have to produce the following documents when applying for the visa:

• Visa issuance application form (Form No. 17)
• Valid Passport
• One standard-size photo
• Income proof, such as employment certificate, salary slip, account transaction details, etc.
• Character certificate or criminal record certificate
• Private health insurance subscription certificate
• Proof of family relationship (if accompanied by family)

How can I apply for the visa?

According to the Korean Ministry’s official release announcing the visa, those who wish to obtain it can apply via Korean embassies in their respective country.

Foreigners currently in Korea having short-term tourist visas such as the B-1, B-2, and C-3 can transition into the workcation visa, provided they meet all the requirements.
